Kyle Krause, PhD Candidate in Composition

Kyle Krause is a New York-based composer, pianist, and music educator. His compositional process explores textural/prismatic aspects of music and is often inspired by humanity's position at the crossroads of science and nature. The use of resonance, temporal layering, micro-polytonality, timbral blending, historic quotations, and storytelling are also key components of his works. 

Recently, Kyle has worked with ensembles such as the Chamber Fellows of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the Los Angeles Percussion Quartet, Ensemble Mise-En, CISUM Percussion, Contraption, Fulcrum Point New Music Ensemble, Arcomusical, and the NIU New Music Ensemble. Kyle’s music has been performed throughout the United States and internationally at venues and festivals including Chosen Vale, the International Percussion Ensemble Festival, PASIC, and on CSOtv.

Kyle has received multiple awards for his music, including 1st place in the 2016 Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University DeLillo Composition Competition. He was also the recipient of the 2015 Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University Otto Ortmann Award in Composition and the 2014 Northern Illinois University College of Visual and Performing Arts Dean’s Award. Kyle was also a finalist in the 2017 BMI Student Composer Awards, and the 2018 American Prize in Composition for Instrumental Chamber Music. He earned his B.M. in both composition and piano performance from Northern Illinois University, and his M.M. in composition while studying with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, Kevin Puts at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University. Kyle has also been on faculty at Northern Illinois University where he taught aural skills and musicianship. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in composition at SUNY Stony Brook.
