Dr. Shih has four decades of experience in higher education that include supervisory duties in the areas of admissions, career planning, student activities, new student orientation, academic advising, judicial affairs, and psychological counseling. He teaches HEA521 Diversity and Higher Education and is the Program Director for the graduate-level study abroad courses to Singapore and China--HEA560 Comparative University Systems.
Before joining the HEA Program, Dr. Shih served 13 years as the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs (Chief Student Affairs Officer) at The City University of New York (CUNY) School of Law. Prior to CUNY, he served 12 years in various positions at Stony Brook University including as the Director of the Center for Academic Advising.
Dr. Shih has lectured and presented papers and workshops on multiculturalism, academic advising, student services and Asian American students. As a diversity consultant, he has trained high school teachers, college administrators, corporate professionals, law students as well as undergraduates. With interests in transnationalism and globalization, his latest publication focuses on the impact of international students on American college campuses.
Dr. Shih is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Suffolk County Community College where he teaches Cultural Anthropology. He also directs Stony Brook University’s undergraduate study abroad program to Singapore.
A strong believer in volunteerism and community service, Dr. Shih has served on the Board of Directors of the United Way of Long Island, the Asian American/Asian Research Institute of CUNY and the Organization of Chinese Americans, Long Island Chapter. He was also a member of the Advisory Council of the Nassau Suffolk Law Services Committee, Inc.
Dr. Shih received his B.A. from Greenville College in Illinois and his M.A. and PhD in Cultural Anthropology from the New School in New York City. He is the recipient of the SUNY Chancellor's Award and the Stony Brook President's Award for Excellence in Professional Service. He received the Bentley Glass-Mortimer Kreuter Excellence in Teaching and the Higher Education Administration Faculty Excellence Award from the School of Professional Studies at Stony Brook University.
