• When should I meet with an advisor?

  Not sure when to meet with your advisor? Remember "Early, Often, and Always"

  • Early: check in a few weeks after the start of classes but before advanced registration
  • Often: at least once a semester to make sure you are on the right track!
  • Always: before make significant changes to your schedule such as withdrawing from a course, withdrawing from the term, or selecting GPNC.

  Meeting with an advisor can can help you avoid costly miss-steps that can impact graduation.

• Why should I meet with an advisor?

  You have at least two advisors: a major advisor and a generalist advisor. Here's how they can help you:

  
  

  • YourMajor Advisor can talk with you about topics including major courses, careers, graduate school, relevant internships, and anything related to your major
  • Your"Generalist" Advisor can talk with you about SBCs, university graduation requirements, major exploration, academic challenges, academic resources, and ways to make the most out of your Stony Brook experience.
• Who do I talk to about my schedule?

  Depending upon your question, and your program, you should most likely speak with at least two people. You will want to consult with your major advisor (who is typically the Undergraduate Program Director in your major) and with your "generalist" advisor. By speaking with both individuals, you will be able to discuss multiple aspects of your schedule and create the best schedule to meet your plans and goals./

• How long will it take me to graduate?

  This is a great question! The answer depends upon multiple factors such as whether you attend part-time or full-time, your choice of major, your academic standing, and your knowledge of degree requirements. In order to graduate in as timely a fashion as possible, become familiar with your Degree Works audit and meet with your major advisor and your "generalist" advisor at least once each semester.

• How do I check my degree progress?

  The first step in checking your degree progress is to review your degree progress audit -- otherwise known as Degree Works. You can find Degree Works by logging into SOLAR, clicking on Student Records and Registration, Degree Progress, then Degree Works. You can also find Degree Works by following these instructions. When you open Degree Works you will find a blueprint of requirements you have completed and those which still remain. The blueprint is broken down into different sections including total credits required/applied, upper division credits required/applied, general education courses remaining, progress in your major, and additional information if you are pursuing a double major, minor, and/or specialization. It is also worth your time to meet with your major and "generalist" advisors at least once each semester to review your Degree Audit and discuss your degree progress plans.

• How can I get involved with clubs and organizations?

  The SBEngaged website is an informational website containing everything you need to know about clubs and organizations.

• Do I need a membership to use the recreation center?

  If you are an undergraduate student, you have one! All undergraduates pay a recreation fee. Your recreation fee gives you access to the recreation center and all of its programs including fitness classes and intramural sports. Graduate students can purchase a discounted membershiphere.

• How can I take care of my physical and mental health?

  Student Health, Wellness and Prevention Services has a variety of services like the Student Health Center, Counseling and Psychological Services, and the Center for Prevention and Outreach which can help you with your physical and mental health and well being.
