Petitions & Appeals
IMPORTANT UPDATE TO REQUESTS FOR RETAKES/LATE ADDS
As a student at Stony Brook, you have an obligation to review, understand, and abide by University policies, procedures, requirements, and deadlines as contained in the Undergraduate Bulletin. The academic calendar and deadlines are published on the Registrar’s Office website.
On occasion, extraordinary circumstances permit students to request an exception to an academic policy or deadline. The Executive Officer and the Committee on Academic Standing and Appeals (CASA) consider requests for exceptions to academic policies through a petition process. At times there may be academic experiences or situations that fall outside of the Petition for Academic Exceptions. The Associate Provost for Academic Success considers these other special requests and appeals.
The following requests require a Petition for Academic Exceptions:
- Late Withdrawal from one or more courses
- Late Withdrawal from the entire semester
- Late Section/Credit Change
- Underload
- Overload
- Waiver of the Waiting Period
- Conditional Reinstatement from Suspension (seperate form)
- Academic Renewal
Please note that requests for retakes (third or more attempts) and requests to late add a course (after the university add/drop deadline) now follow a different request process and a different form.
STEP 1: Contact an academic advisor and consult the advisor on the petition process.
Students must use the online Petition for Academic Exceptions Form to request an exception. This form is only for students in majors in the College of Arts and Sciences, School
of Communication and Journalism, and School of Marine & Atmospheric Sciences. For
students in majors in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences: ceas_info@stonybrook.edu. For students in majors in the College of Business (CoB): cobadvising@stonybrook.edu
STEP 2: Carefully review the detailed instructions under "Petition Process" and the
instructions on the online form. Enter the required information in the form, and upload
a statement and any relevant documentation.
Complete all required sections of the form. If you are an international student, you must consult your Visa & Immigration Advisor
before submitting the form.
Students will be notified of the petition outcome via email.
If approved, the petition will automatically be processed and any relevant fees will
