Frequently Asked Questions
You can review your academic standing notation on your unofficial transcript (available on SOLAR). Students who are not in good standing will also receive a SOLAR message and enrollment hold, and an email sent to their student account. Fall semester results are usually available around January 4 and spring semester results are usually available around June 4. These dates vary. Please see Important Dates and Deadlines for current information.
Your academic review result offers you the opportunity to reflect on your academic wellness and review your academic goals. If your academic performance is below the standard, you can make the most of this opportunity by connecting with your academic advisor and with additional student support resources.
- In order to remain eligible to receive many types of financial aid, students must continue to meet satisfactory academic progress guidelines regarding credit load and enrollment, grade point average, pace, maximum time frame, and other criteria. Students who are not in good academic standing are at risk for losing financial aid eligibility and should contact the Financial Aid office to discuss their eligibility and the possibility of appealing the loss of financial aid.
An academic standing hold is not a punishment or the end of your academic career. The hold is a notification that it is time to seek help in taking an active approach to improve your academics and get your academic wellness back on track. Students should contact their advising office to determine how to resolve their hold. In most cases, students will need to meet with an advisor and in the meeting you may be asked to:
- Reflect on challenges that led to academic difficulty
- Discuss campus resources
- Plan a balanced schedule
- Understand GPA, grades, and policies
- Develop a plan for success
The academic standing remark is considered to be accurate at the time of the review and is not typically altered. Students who resolve Incomplete (I) grades after the review can contact the Academic Standing Coordinator, Michelle Setnikar, at Michelle.Setnikar@stonybrook.edu to find out if an update is possible.
