Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering
Philosophy of our MS Program
The Master of Science Program in Biomedical Engineering is designed to provide a unique educational experience focused on both foundational and cutting-edge biomedical engineering topics. All students have the option to be exposed to and participate in our world-recognized research programs housed within various departments in Stony Brook University. We have taken the approach that students in our MS program have the flexibility to tailor their education degree plan to particular career-oriented tracks and sub-disciplines within those tracks as needed to further their career path.
We are proud of our alumni, many of which have gone on to successful careers in academics, industry, start-ups, law, medicine and many other fields. We take students from diverse educational backgrounds and train them to become leaders in the biomedical fields. Mission of Our MS Program
Graduates of the biomedical engineering master of science program will become trained engineers that can:
1. Address clinical, industry or business needs related to standing biomedical issues
2. Design, develop and test solutions that can address standing needs
3. Communicate solutions with various stakeholders
4. Strategize implementation of solutions with constraint considerations
Educational Opportunities
We have divided our master of science program into three tracks which are focused on various career opportunities within biomedical engineering. Students can elect to focus on an academic career track, an industry career track or an entrepreneurship career track. The goals of the academic career track are to provide students with a broad background of biomedical engineering, with which they can choose to continue their education into a specific area at the doctoral level. Also, teaching and research opportunities are fundamental to this track. Students that elect the industry track will have the opportunity to take courses that will introduce concepts of the industry setting and possible management opportunities and skills needed to be successful in industry. Students that elect the entrepreneurship track will focus on skills required for new technology development, market placement and communication sciences to various stakeholders.
All students are required to undertake a set core course requirements which is dependent on the track that the students elect to take. Specific degree requirements for each of these tracks are discussed on our Degree Requirements page and within the Graduate Bulletin. Students have the flexibility to change between the tracks.
All students also have the option of completing the MS degree with a thesis or with a project. The thesis is a document that illustrates independent work that may advance a specific field. The thesis must be defended both publicly and within a closed defense in front of a committee of experts. The project option results in a capstone project that can be research based or academic based. We provide a significant amount of latitude for students on their project. Please work with the Graduate Program Director to identify an appropriate project and thesis committee.
Research Opportunities
From the beginning of our graduate program to now, all of our master of science students have gained first hand experience of working in a research setting. Many of these students have used this work to complete thesis requirements or the new project requirements. Furthermore, many students have been included in research publications or conference presentations based on the level of work they have conducted. The Biomedical Engineering Graduate Program has strong ties with research facilities housed within the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Renaissance School of Medicine, Brookhaven National Labs and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Our students also have the opportunity to engage with the Center for Biotechnology and many start-up companies that are housed within the incubator space on the Stony Brook campus. Research areas include, biomechanics, biofluids, bioimaging, regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, nanotechnology, medical physics, medical imaging, among many others.
