Helping ELL's Learn English Vocabulary in the General Classroom

Participants in this course will learn the following information, skills, and strategies:

  1. How do words get learned and stay learned, both for ELLs and for native speakers of English?
  2. What are the principles of second language acquisition, and how can teachers infuse these principles into their daily teaching routines?
  3. What specific academic words must students learn as possible for success in school? What are the best ways to teach these words in a classroom that includes both ELLs and native speakers of English?
  4. What are engaging, sociable, low-stress ways to introduce, reinforce, and review academic words/phrases?
  5. The majority of ELLs here on Long Island speak Spanish as their native language. What can non-Spanish-speaking teachers do to help our Spanish speakers make the transition from Spanish to English?
