Registered Dietitian (Long Island Veteran's Home)

Position Summary

As per LISVH policies and the ethical standards of Dietetics, the Registered Dietician will oversee advisory, counseling, and instructional services aimed at making recommendations and resolving nutritional issues. The primary objective is to assist the facility in meeting residents' nutritional requirements and ensuring optimal care through the Department of Food & NutritionalServices.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree (In lieu of a degree, six years of directly related full-time computer support experience or a Bachelor’s degree with a major in Nutrition, Dietetics, or related field
  • Current Registration or Registry eligible with CDR Certification
  • NYS Certified Dietician
  • Thorough knowledge of Medical Nutritional Therapy and Long-Term Care documentation requirements
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary       team.
  • Must be able to speak, write, read and understand English fluently
  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position. 
  • Ability to meet acceptable background check standards.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Dietetics, Nutrition, or related field
  • 1+ year in Long Term Care
  • Member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics 
  • Member of Long Island Dietetic Association

Program/Department Responsibilities:

  • Maintain open lines of communication with the Department of Food & Nutritional Services to ensure compliance with the Department of Health, Veterans Administration, and OBRA codes and regulations to meet the resident’s nutritional requirements
  • Monitor and consult with Director of Nutritional Services regarding preparation of resident’s food services, correct temperature, palatability, portion control, appearance, accuracy, and resident satisfaction of meals via meal observations and CQI results.
  • Attend all resident care plan meetings and will subsequently complete the required nutritional assessments, care plans, progress notes, and interim notes for those residents assigned to his/her charge. The frequency is determined per LISVH policies and procedures and the Department of Health specifications. 
  • Will make recommendations related to resident care plans in the areas of but not limited to: fluid, electrolyte, vitamin, mineral, carbohydrate, protein, fat, and caloric needs. 
  • Conduct comprehensive nutritional assessments of residents upon admission and regularly thereafter.
  • Develop individualized dietary plans based on assessment findings, medical history, and dietary preferences.
  • Monitor and evaluate residents' nutritional status and adjust dietary plans as necessary.
  • Provide ongoing nutrition education and counseling to residents, families, and caregivers.
  • Collaborate with nurses and other healthcare professionals to optimize resident care plans.
  • Contribute to the discharge care planning process including completion of all discharge summary forms and attendance of schedule discharge meetings.
  • Attend Interdisciplinary Comprehensive Care Plan meetings and other resident oriented meetings as necessary. 
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings to discuss resident progress and care goals.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards, including federal, state, and facility-specific guidelines.
  • Oversee the implementation of therapeutic diets and ensure proper documentation of dietary interventions.
  • Ensures meals services meet the individual requirements of each resident specific nutritional needs.
  • Develop individualized, comprehensive care plans, document appropriately and input care plan data into the computer system.
  • Mentoring Dietetic Interns as assigned
  • Stay current with developments in the field of dietetics and incorporate evidence-based practices into clinical care.
  • All other duties as assigned by Director/supervisor

Health and Safety - Applied to all duties and functions

  • Support the Veterans Home and Association in maintaining a safe working environment by following departmental safety procedures.
  • Exposure to chemicals, dust, moving objects, loud noise, slippery services, wetness, potential electrical hazards, and potential burns may require special clothing/safety equipment.  Occasionally exposed to blood, body tissue/fluids, and hazardous materials.  Rarely exposed to high elevation or radiation.
  • Must be able to see objects closely, as in reading, continuously.  Able to see objects far away continuously.  Able to discriminate color continuously.  Able to perceive depth continuously.
  • Must be able to continuously see and hear normal sounds with some background noise, as in answering a telephone.  Able to distinguish sounds, such as voice patterns, continuously.
  • Able to push/pull objects continuously using maximum effort.  Able to perform motor skills such as bending, twisting, turning, turning, kneeling, climbing stairs, reaching out/up, wrist turn/torque, grasping, pinching, finger manipulation, feeling perception, fast response, continuously, and occasionally squatting.
  • Must be able to perform tasks that require hand-eye coordination continuously; able to perform body coordination of the upper and lower body continuously;
  • Must be able to give and receive verbal communications continuously.  Able to read written communications continuously.  Able to compose written communication occasionally.
  • Must be able to remain on feet up to 8 hours consecutively, up to 8 hours per day.
  • Must be able to concentrate on fine detail with some interruptions continuously.
  • Must remember multiple tasks/assignments given to self and others during the day continuously; remember multiple tasks/assignments given to self and others during the day continuously; remember multiple tasks/assignments given to self and others over long periods frequently.
  • Be familiar with and strive to follow applicable federal, state, or local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement, and standards.
  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
