MA-TESOL (48 Credits) Requirements

This degree requires students to complete the 48 credits of coursework listed below with an overall average of B or higher. The MA-TESOL (48 Credits) planner is attached here.

In addition to the minimum Graduate School requirements, the following are required:

Coursework

A. Professional Preparation

CEE 505 Education: Theory & Practice
CEF 547 Principles & Practices of Special Education
CEE 565/PSY 595 Human Development
LIN 524 TESOL Pedagogy: Theory and Practice (Methods I) & LIN 579 Field Experience N-12
LIN 529 TESOL Pedagogy: Language & Literacy Development Through Content Areas (Methods II)   & LIN 579 Field Experience N-12
LIN 578 (1 credit) Field Experience in Educational Contexts 
LIN 574 Managing Instruction, Assessment, and Resources (this course is taken during Student Teaching)
LIN 581 Supervised Student Teaching grades N-6 (taken in conjunction with LIN 574 and 582)
LIN 582 Supervised Student Teaching grades 7-12 (taken in conjunction with LIN 574 and 581)

B.  Linguistics & Foundations

LIN 522 Phonetics
LIN 527 Structure of English
LIN 530 Introduction to General Linguistics
LIN 532 Second Language Acquisition
LIN 541 Bilingualism

C.  And two of the following:

LIN 526 Analysis of an Uncommonly Taught language
LIN 542 Sociolinguistics
LIN 555 Error Analysis
LIN 571 TESOL Pedagogy: Curriculum Design and Evaluation
LIN 572 Course Design: Theory and Practice

Any other TESOL-related course approved by the Program Director

D. Two years (4 semesters) of language(s) other than English at undergraduate or graduate level.

Other Requirements

A. All teacher candidates must complete the following: (these do not expire)

NCE 600  Child Abuse Identification and Reporting
NCE 601 Identification & Referral of Substance Abuse
NCE 602 School Violence Prevention and Intervention
NCE 603 Fingerprinting or https://uenroll.identogo.com/workflows/14ZGQT  (fee of approximately $100 applies)
NCE 604 DASA- Dignity for All Students Act (Training in Harassment, Bullying & Discrimination Prevention & Intervention)

B. All teacher candidates must complete the following NYS Teacher Certification Exams

• Educating All Students (EAS)
• Content Specialty Test (CST) - ESOL

Performance

Students must achieve an overall grade point average (GPA) of B (3.0) or higher in all graduate courses taken at Stony Brook in order to receive this degree.
