MA-TESOL 30 Credits Track Requirements

This degree requires students to complete the 30 credits of coursework listed below with an overall average of B or higher. The MA-TESOL 30 Credits planner is attached here. This track culminates in an MA in TESOL and enables those holding a current NYS certification to apply for a pre-K-12 TESOL certificate.

A. Professional Preparation (9 credits):

LIN 524 TESOL Pedagogy: Theory and Practice (Methods I) & LIN 579 Field Experience N-12
LIN 529 TESOL Pedagogy: Language & Literacy Development Through Content Areas (Methods II)   & LIN 579 Field Experience N-12
LIN 578 (1 credit) Field Experience in Educational Contexts 

B.  Linguistics & Foundations (9 credits):

LIN 522 Phonetics
LIN 527 Structure of English
LIN 530 Introduction to General Linguistics

C.  Four of the following (12 credits):

LIN 532 Second Language Acquisition
LIN 541 Bilingualism                                                                                                                                                                    
LIN 542 Sociolinguistics
LIN 555 Error Analysis
LIN 571 TESOL Pedagogy: Curriculum Design and Evaluation
LIN 572 Course Design: Theory and Practice

Any other TESOL-related course approved by the Program Director

D. Six credits of language(s) other than English at undergraduate or graduate level.

Other Requirements

All teacher candidates must complete the following NYS Teacher Certification Exam: Content Specialty Test (CST) - ESOL. For registration and information go to: www.nystce.nesinc.com

Performance

Students must achieve an overall grade point average (GPA) of B (3.0) or higher in all graduate courses taken at Stony Brook in order to receive this degree.
