    About the Program

    Experience the vibrant culture and rich history of Italy with a 19-day university program in Rome this January! Immerse yourself in the heart of the Eternal City, studying the city’s history, art, architecture, while exploring world-renowned landmarks such as the Colosseum, Vatican City, and the Roman Forum. This program offers hands-on learning through guided tours, museum visits, and optional special excursions to nearby cities like Florence and Pompeii.

    You’ll live and study with fellow students, venturing into authentic Italian cuisine and the unique rhythm of Roman life. With experienced professors and local guides, you’ll gain valuable insights into Italy’s cultural heritage while earning 3 to 6 academic credits. Whether you're studying classical art, the Italian language, modern history, or just intend to soak in the city's ambiance, this experience offers an unforgettable opportunity to enrich your education in one of Europe’s most iconic cities.

    Highlights of the experience include: 

    • Residency at Palazzo Carpegna, a former convent transformed into a 4-star hotel.
    • Visits to the main historic sites of the city of Rome: The Colosseum and the Forums, St. Peter and Vatican City, the Vatican Museum, Capitol Hill, the Trajan markets, as well as the Museums of Modern Art, MAXXI and MACRO.
    • Travel with Stony Brook’s professors with decades of experience in the City.
    • No previous knowledge of Italian necessary.

    Additional Information Faculty-Led study abroad programs may require group travel. Please reach out to your IAP Coordinator prior to making any travel arrangements.
    Program Housing Statement: Stony Brook University is required to comply with the housing policies of the host country, partner institution and/or hotel/hostel. These policies may include requirements such as sex-based housing placement.

    Other Requirements Undergraduates only; all qualified students may apply

    Candidates may be interviewed to determine their qualifications for participating and representing Stony Brook University abroad.
  • Academic Information

    Course Information

    Students are eligible to enroll in one of the following 3 credit courses:

    • HUI 231: Journeys to Italy (ARTS, CER) 
    • EST 209: Introduction to Italian Design: Theory and Practice (STAS)

    Academic Policies

    • Credits earned on this program will calculate toward a student's GPA at Stony Brook University. Non-SBU students are advised to check their home university policy on grade and credit transfer.
    • Students following the Stony Brook Curriculum (SBC) may request for GLO and EXP+ in addition to requirements fulfilled by their coursework.
