Subject: New Roommate Search Tool and Off-Campus Housing Resources for Students
Dear Seawolves,
Commuter Student Services & Off-Campus Living is pleased to announce the launch of our newroommate search tool! This platform connects Stony Brook University community members seeking potential
roommates in off-campus housing. You can create a profile and search others' profiles.
Please note that the University does not facilitate roommate matches. You are encouraged
to review profiles and preferences of interest and communicate directly via the contact
information provided.
Apartment Complex Options in the Area:
We have compiled a list of major local apartment complexes in the area.
Fairfield Properties is eager to support our campus community seeking off-campus housing, and has created
a Fairfield/Stony Brook University liaison to accommodate leasing requests. They can
be contacted at offcampus@fairfieldproperties.com, or by phone at (631) 449-0092.
Fairfield has indicated that their facilities can host roommates to make prices more
feasible for our Stony Brook community. All local facilities with such available spaces
can legally host: 2 tenants/studio, 2-3 tenants/1 bedroom, 4 tenants/2 bedroom, and
5 tenants/3 bedroom. A one-time $500 discount is applied to apartments with University-affiliated
tenants. Some locations may also be able to accommodate academic month/10 month leases,
upon request. Any follow-up questions should be directed to the Liaison, as listed
above.
Local realtors are also available to assist with your rental search. Please note that there is typically
a fee associated with real estate agency services.
Beware of Rental Scams:
As a reminder, the Commuter Student Services & Off-Campus Living website is the only housing and roommate listing site officially recognized by the University.
Private property owners are required to provide legal off-campus rental permits in
order to be listed. Please note that the University does not coordinate off-campus
housing arrangements. When exploring alternative housing listing platforms, please
beware of scams.
Note, the University has no affiliation with any social media pages that market local
rental housing.

As a word of caution, you should never sign a lease or provide a security deposit before you've seen a home or apartment in person.

If you cannot view a property in person due to distance, you should request a live, virtual tour from the landlord through a video conferencing service.

You should also never pay a fee to take a tour of a property, another common scam tactic. Visit our site to learn more about rental ‘red flags’.
