Position Description:
The Goldstein Family Student-Athlete Development Center is seeking graduate-level students to serve as Academic Success Coaches (ASCs) and work with a small cohort of student-athletes. The ASC would be exposed to all facets of the job, including but not limited to: meeting weekly with at-risk student-athletes to monitor academic progress, managing study hall, working with NCAA Progress Towards Degree rules, connecting student-athletes to campus resources, helping them understand University processes/procedures, assisting with advising student-athletes regarding course registration and helping with programming and other initiatives of the office. Each Academic Success Coach will work collaboratively with one of our full-time advisors, so as to gain a breadth of experience across various sport programs we have here at Stony Brook, but also see the details on a micro scale of advising a set cohort. Academic Success Coaches will also meet as a group or with the academic advisor with whom they most closely work to share experiences and monitor their learning.We are seeking graduate students who can commit to working between 12-20 hours per week. Job Duties & Responsibilities:
- Assist an Athletic Academic Advisor with the management of a small cohort of student-athletes across multiple teams by meeting weekly to discuss academic progress
- Keep detailed records and notes of students’ academic progress
- Meet and communicate regularly with direct supervisors
- Assist staff members with weekly reporting & data collection of appointments in the Goldstein Family Student Athlete Development Center
- As a group of interns, create and put on a Student Athlete Development related workshop in the 2nd semester
- Assistant with various programs and Student Athlete Development projects and initiatives

The Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards supports the educational mission of Stony Brook University by addressing and resolving situations in which the behavioral choices of students may negatively impact others and/or themselves. Through our student conduct processes and outreach, we educate students on the rights and responsibilities of community membership, and support the success of individual students and the Stony Brook University community as a whole. We aim to achieve these goals through a range of interventions from informal guidance and reflective conversations through formal student conduct processes which can lead to restorative and educational outcomes for our students.
Reporting to the Associate Director of Student Conduct and Community Standards, the Community Standards Assistant position offers outstanding practical experience for graduate students who are interested in the areas of student conduct/accountability, advising, educational programs, assessment, and general higher education/student affairs. The Community Standards Assistant will gain investigatory, analytical, decision making, presentation, and written and oral communication skills through this position.
The Community Standards Assistant will have opportunities to collaborate with all staff members in the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards, investigate and resolve student conduct matters, and engage in developmental conversations with students through one on one meetings and by facilitating group educational classes. They will have opportunities to serve on Administrative Hearing Boards for alleged violations of higher level policies. The Community Standards Assistant will become familiar with the federal, state, and local mandates that govern student conduct in Higher Education. Finally, the Community Standards Assistant will assist with assessment activities and other special projects as needed.
Major Responsibilities:- Serve as a student conduct officer for lower-level cases including interviewing students and witnesses with knowledge of the complaint
- Shadow seasoned conduct officers during investigations and meetings related to higher-level cases
- Serve as a hearing board member or complainant during Administrative Hearings

Graduate Practica/Field Education and Internships
at Stony Brook University
Graduate practica/field education are an integral part of the graduate education experience. Students who complete
practicums/field education in the Division of Student Affairs will have the opportunity
to gain knowledge, professional skills, and a broad understanding about the Higher
Education profession. Special note: Tuition remission, health insurance, and retirement benefits are not
included as part of graduate internship/field education and practicum positions.
HEA Practicum. Students enrolled in the Higher Education Administration (HEA) Program who do not have one year of professional work experience in higher education or are
not currently employed in higher education, are required to complete a 150-hour (10
hours per week for 15 weeks) practicum (unpaid internship) with an approved supervisor
working in the higher education field or student affairs department to gain practical
experience. In addition to their field hours, students will also complete a 14-week
online course, HEA 586 - Practicum in Higher Education, to build a strong theory-to-practice
connection, and to reflect on and discuss the practicum experience. Students will
earn 3 credits and can choose to do their internship in the Fall or Spring semester.
The 3 credits earned will count as one of the six required electives for the program.
This practicum opportunity is for students who are in the Master of Arts program only.
Students in the Advanced Graduate Certificate program are not eligible to earn credit
for a practicum experience. Approval from the Department of Higher Education Administration is required.
Graduate internships and field education offer students the opportunity to explore potential career paths, build their resumes, and gain essential industry experience that can lead to full-time employment. Internships can be for academic credit/no credit, paid or unpaid, and occur during the Fall/Spring semester or during the winter/summer breaks. Field Education opportunities are required, for academic credit, and coordinated through the Master of Social Work graduate program in the School of Social Welfare. Internships and Field Education can be on-site, hybrid or remote. Internships and field education for academic credit require approval from an academic department.
The Academic Success Coach (ASC) will identify learning needs of School of Health Professions students (undergraduate, graduate, professional) and develop support programs and services. They will develop, document, implement, and evaluate small group and large-scale tailored interventions. The ASC will identify at-risk students based on incoming assessments, academic status and performance and/or specific skills development needs. The ASC will be responsible for providing educational support through learning strategy enhancement and academic skill development. The ASC strives to help students become self-regulated learners, while maintaining a welcoming and supportive learning environment for all.
