Ammann and Gray Housing Assignments Update

Our apologies for not being able to respond individually to the high volume of emails regarding individual questions about the assignment process, as our initial efforts have been focused on ensuring that all 400 impacted residents have an assigned room on campus.

Now that this first step has been completed, we are sending this email to provide background information about how assignments were made and steps that you can follow if you wish to request a new assignment. Please share this information with family members who may have sent emails and questions as well.

Background on Assignments:

On Thursday, September 1, we started our reassignment process for 900 people from four buildings given the unprecedented flooding that occurred in the basement areas of our residence halls. Initially, we only assigned those that indicated that they needed a space that evening. This led to some roommate pairs having one roommate with an assignment and one without an assignment at that time.

Then on Friday, September 2, we were glad to learn that O’Neill and Irving residents would be able to return to their original spaces. Our goal on Friday, September 2, and Saturday, September 3 was to make sure all Ammann and Gray residents had a space assigned to them. Unfortunately, we were unable to utilize any temporary spaces that residents of O’Neill and Irving utilized the evening of 9/1 as they were still in the process of returning their keys.  As a result, students were assigned to temporary spaces across our campus to ensure everyone could return to classes today.

If your initial assignment moved you to a more expensive rate type (single, has A/C, or cooking), you will not be charged the higher rate at this time. You will continue to be charged your Ammann/Gray housing rate until the building is available to be re-occupied. At the point in which the buildings are returned back to us for occupancy, if you choose to remain in the temporary option, you will then be charged the prevailing rate for that space for the remainder of your housing agreement.

Reassignment Requests:

At this time we have paused until further notice all room changes for residents that are not from Ammann and Gray, which provides the greatest flexibility in trying to meet your interests.  As an Ammann and Gray resident, if you wish to request a new assignment from the room where you have been relocated, please fill out this FORMby Thursday, September 9 Please ensure your request falls into one of the following categories:

  • I am a continuing student who would like to live in a continuing student area other than the one I was relocated to. Any changes to your assignment from this request will be charged at the prevailing rate of the newest assignment. Example: You were reassigned to Tabler as your temporary assignment and you requested a double room in West Apartments, you would then pay the double room rate of West Apartments based on the date of your move there.

  • I was separated from my roommate and want to see if we can be reassigned back together. (Both roommates must submit the form. If they do not, we cannot address this request).

  • I am a first-year student who was displaced to a suite-style area, and I want to live in a first-year area in H, Roosevelt, or Mendelsohn (Irving or O’Neill).

  • I am a first-year student who was displaced to a single room and prefer to live with a roommate.

If you are a first-year student, you may be requesting multiple of the options above and we will need to know which one is your priority as part of your request. We cannot take requests outside of the above parameters. First-years cannot take requests for specific placements or locations. Continuing students will be asked in the form about areas of interest into another continuing student area, but we cannot guarantee availability.

We will work as quickly as possible to process these changes and requests, but it may take a couple of weeks, and we may not be able to meet all requests given limited remaining inventory. Our area staff is working to collect all keys given out to temporary relocations of Irving and O’Neill residents, and as those come back our goal is to assign those spaces to students who completed the preference form.

If you have a medical-related concern for your reassignment option but did not have a previously documented referral for a housing accommodation from the Student Accessibility Support Center, please see their process for housing accommodations: https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/studentaffairs/sasc/Students/services/services/housing_accommodations

Once we are notified that Ammann and Gray can re-open, we will reach out to all individuals who lived there as of 9/1/2021 about their preference to return to their original space. If you decline to return to Ammann and Gray and your relocation assignment becomes permanent for the remainder of the year, you will pay the prevailing rate for that location for the spring semester.

We thank you for your continued patience and understanding during this difficult time. We are moving as quickly as possible to ensure you have a successful semester at Stony Brook.

Sincerely,
