Internships/External Fellowships

STRIDE offers a unique opportunity for a guaranteed summer internship for PhD students in the program. STRIDE students will embark on a 10-week summer internship experience once during the course of the program. Internship applications are available early in the Spring semester. Placements include: Antarctic Southern Ocean Coalition (ASOC), National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), among others.

The internship experience will give you an opportunity for real-world applications of everything you've been learning within the STRIDE program; science communication, data analysis, and data visualization.

As a STRIDE trainee, you are encouraged to network and build contacts within your desired field of study. You are encouraged to identify internship opportunities through these networks and are permitted to arrange internships on your own if you so choose. STRIDE will assist with any logistics inquiries including travel, lodging, and cost of living.

Solution will likely involve abstract representations of application source code, backwards slices of application code, data flow modeling, and measures of tree similarity.

Duke Science Policy Summer Institute

This writing-intensive 10-week program at Duke University (May 29 – August 3, 2018) will give participants a grounding in how to read, write, and understand science policy. During a 4-week curriculum, participants will learn the basics of Science Communication, U.S. Civics, Finance & U.S. Markets, Writing for a Policy Audience (Briefs, Memos & Analyses), and Professional Ethics in Science Policy. The optional 6-week practicum extension to the program will allow participants to create policy portfolios by working in the SciPol office to produce policy briefs, memos and legislation for local and national clients at the nexus of science and policy. Summer 2018 NASA Education Internship Application information:

Each summer NASA offers competitive, rich research and development experiences to students from high school, through undergraduate and graduate levels at each of its 10 Centers. Goddard Space Flight typically welcomes close to 500 interns across its four campuses –Greenbelt, MD, Wallops Island VA; New York City and Fairmont, WV.

This is a NASA-wide application system called: “One Stop Shopping Initiative: NASA Internships, Fellowships, and Scholarships – “OSSI”.

The system opened mid-October for Summer 2018 opportunities! Students will find all of the information they need by exploring the web site above.

To apply, students create a profile then complete their application. An application is not considered “complete” until at least one letter of recommendation is received from one person who the student asked to write the letters. Once the application is completed it is “live”. Then students MUST search for and apply for specific opportunities. Students may apply for up to 15 positions at all 10 NASA Centers. Just completing an application doesn’t translate into “applying” for specific opportunities. The system closes in March 1, 2018for Summer 2018opportunities. Please pay careful attention to the application closing date; it is non-negotiable.

Basic Eligibility

National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP)

NCEP is offering up to 10 paid summer internships targeted towards current undergraduate and graduate students to work in areas that will meet the future needs of the ever-broadening user community and address the strategic climate-water-weather issues.

Each student will collaborate with one or more scientists at our five centers located in College Park, MD: Climate Prediction Center, Environmental Modeling Center, NOAA Central Operations, Ocean Prediction Center, and Weather Prediction Center.

The internship provides a $5,000 stipend, furnished housing, and will cover your travel costs to College Park, Maryland.

Operations Management, Information System - ZRS is continuing the development of our integrated closed-loop Operations Management Information System (OMIS) to expand our capabilities and bandwidth to provide better transparancy to both our internal/external customers while giving us reliable real-time data to assist us in making fact-based decisions.This system will enhance our operational efficiency and allow us to support the business units projected growth while continuing to deliver superior customer service.

The interns will assist in the continued development of the OMIS. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine:

The Gulf Research Program is now accepting applications for its Science Policy Fellowship. Our Science Policy Fellows gain first-hand experience as they spend one year alongside decision-makers at agencies across Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, and Florida. With the guidance of a mentor, fellows delve into activities like research, evaluation, restoration planning, stakeholder outreach, and policy development and learn what it takes to make scientific information not just useful but useable. Fellows who have completed an MA, MS, or MPH/MSPH degree or who are currently enrolled in a doctoral program will receive an annual stipend of $45,000. Fellows who have completed a PhD, ScD, EngD, MD, DrPH, or DVM will receive an annual stipend of $55,000.
