Collaborative for the Earth Director Search

The Office of the Provost has launched a search for a faculty director to lead the newly announced Collaborative for the Earth at Stony Brook.

The inaugural Director of the Collaborative for the Earth will be a .5 FTE faculty role for a three-year term of service. The Director will be chosen through an internal search at Stony Brook.

The Collaborative for the Earth is an “action tank” for facilitating university-wide research, education, and public/policy engagement on global-scale environmental crises. The Collaborative will be an interdisciplinary hub supporting SBU’s development as a global leader in blunting of existential risks to life on Earth and our planet’s interconnected life-supporting systems; with a focus on human dignity and justice and the preservation of societies and civilizations. The Director of the Collaborative for the Earth will be key in the vision for establishing SBU as a global leader in pursuit of solutions toward a thriving, healthy Earth.  


Position Details

Required Qualifications

  • A tenured faculty position at Stony Brook University
  • Scholarly expertise and accomplishment in a relevant domain
  • Demonstrated experience in leadership

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in fund-raising, particularly philanthropy
  • Demonstrated working understanding of policymaking and policymakers
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion among faculty, staff, students, and postdoctoral scholars
  • Superior communication skills
  • Experience in leading and managing change
  • Demonstrated aptitude in addressing concerns specific to a diverse community of domestic and international students
  • Demonstrated skill in public engagement
  • An understanding of the disciplinary differences across SBU

Position Responsibilities

Executive Leadership
  • Provide leadership in establishing, promoting, and furthering the Collaborative for the Earth’s objectives and develop and manage all resources essential to the achievement of these objectives
  • Hire staff and supervise staff to support the daily activities and initiatives of the Collaborative for the Earth
Oversight of Key Initiatives
  • Initiation of a Global Environmental Forum series
  • Development of campus-wide graduate (and/or other degree/certificate) programs
  • Facilitation of community-driven conversations regarding how SBU can best support and leverage this work including its long-term organizational structure
  • Leadership of other initiatives to be determined by the members of the collaborative across curriculum, research, and outreach
External Relations
  • Serve as a key advocate and spokesperson for the Collaborative for the Earth and climate-related fundraising at SBU
Financial Management
  • Oversee the financial management of the Collaborative for the Earth

Procedure for Candidacy

The inaugural Director of the Collaborative for the Earth will be a .5 FTE faculty role for a three-year term of service. The Director will be chosen through an internal search at Stony Brook.

  • Cover letter summarizing their vision for opportunities for SBU to lead in this area, qualifications and motivation for the position including their commitment to collaborative research, teaching, service, and diversity, equity and inclusion
