Supporting Faculty in Developing and Refining the Stony Brook Curriculum

 

Project EDGE: Empowering Development in General Education

This project supports faculty who seek to create or revise courses that will enhance the quality and relevance of Stony Brook's general education program, the Stony Brook Curriculum.

It provides faculty members and departments with financial and in-kind support to design and implement new courses or adapt existing courses.

Funds will be provided directly to faculty as research dollars after the course is approved by the appropriate curriculum committee.

Our ultimate goal is to encourage innovation and excellence in teaching while also reducing students' time to degree through expanded access to general education courses.

Building Your Proposal

• Proposal Criteria

  We seek proposals for courses that will:

  Meet at least one of the following SBC categories: 

  • Explore and Understand the Fine and Performing Arts (ARTS)
  • Respect Diversity and Foster Inclusiveness (DIV)
  • Speak Effectively before an Audience (SPK)
  • Understand Technology (TECH)

  And include at least one of the following components:

  • Integrate AI into the focus of the course and/or creative use of AI in assessments
  • Use active and/or applied learning in the course design
  • Be multidisciplinary in content or approach
• Funding Levels

  Funding levels depend on what kind of course your proposal seeks to develop/redevelop

  New In-Person Courses

  • Up to $5,000 for individual recipients or $3,000 for each co-instructor
  • Class size minimum: 45

  New Asynchronous Online Courses

  • Up to $5,000 (individual recipients only)
  • Class size minimum: 100
• Proposal Materials

  Submissions must include:

  • A letter of support from chair(s) that recognizes a tentative commitment to offer the course soon after it’s approved by the curriculum committee(s)
  • A course proposal, no more than three pages double spaced, that includes a course description and student learning outcomes and considers the following questions:
    • How does this course align with the associated SBC learning outcomes
    • How does it achieve the overarching objectives of the EDGE Fund and Stony Brook curriculum?
    • What is the proposed curriculum design and content?
    • How with the course incorporate the three criteria mentioned above (integration of AI, use of active or applied learning, and multidisciplinarity)?

  Optional Materials

  You may choose to include supplemental materials such as:

  • Draft syllabus
  • Assessment plan
• Successful Proposals

  Funds will be provided directly to faculty as research dollars after the course is approved by the appropriate curriculum committee.

  An instructional designer will be available for consultation .

  With guidance from the Office of Educational Effectiveness, recipients will be required to submit progress reports and participate in assessment activities to track the effectiveness and outcomes of their implemented projects.

  Recipients of funds for online course development will be required to:

  • Build course shells
  • Complete CELT's Online Teaching Course
  • Participate in the SUNY Online Course Quality Review Rubric process after course development
