Speech Language Pathology for Linguistics Majors/Minors

Many speech-language pathologists begin their education with undergraduate degrees in Linguistics. Linguistics majors are particularly well trained for graduate programs in CSD. We invite you to major in Linguistics to prepare for graduate study in CSD.   In the Speech Language Pathology pathway of our Linguistics Major/Minor at Stony Brook, a combination of required and elective courses form an SLP focused path within the Linguistics major.

What will I learn?

Our pathway will equip you with a broad, well-rounded set of skills for preparing to go to graduate school and ultimately pursue a career as a speech language pathologist. Our courses in linguistics and SLP prerequisites will enable you to build a solid foundation in speech science and disorders and further prepare yourself for your next steps in academics. This pathway builds on a knowledge of general linguistics and phonetics, adding in focused courses on topics such as anatomy and experimental methods. You will also learn about how children acquire language, as well as the different disorders associated with speech and hearing.

Can I take this pathway as part of a minor instead of a major?

Yes. Two of the core courses for the minor are needed prerequisites for the SLP focussed courses, and in addition, you can use SLP related courses as your three electives for the minor.
