Provenance
The collection was donated by Leighton Coleman, III in February 2002. Mr. Coleman's
grandfather, Leighton H. Coleman, Esq., was the original owner of the collection.
Extent,Scope, and Content Note
The collection is comprised of three linear ft. of annotated trench maps, photographs
taken by the French Ministry of Education and Fine Arts, and a scrapbook that documents
World War I in Luxembourg, Belgium, and France between 1914 and 1918. The 126 black
and white photographs include soldiers in the ruins of St. Martin’s Cathedral, Ypres, Belgium; barracks; a workshop
where American camouflage, silhouette decoys were created; the 11th American regiment
returning two flags given by the descendents of the maréchal (marshall) de Rochambeau,
City on the Seine; and "Trench Map,St. Julian, 28 N.W. 2, Edition 6 A.”
Arrangement and Processing Note
The collection was processed by Kristen J. Nyitray and graduate assistant Raymond
Prucher in March 2004.

Historical Note
The Western Front was the site of a 400-plus mile stretch of land weaving through
France and Belgium from the Swiss border to the North Sea. This geographic region
was the decisive front during the First World War.
