About the University Archives
MISSION
The University Archives, a division of Stony Brook University Libraries preserve and provide access to collections that document the history of Stony Brook University.
SCOPE
The University Archives collect university produced:
- published reports.
- class schedules and course bulletins.
- speeches.
- commencement programs.
- photographs.
- yearbooks.
- newspapers and magazines.
- master plans.
- ephemera.
- original print theses and dissertations (1965-2007).
The University Archives also maintain subject files on university activities and the Stony Brook Authors and Editors Collection, a print-based collection of faculty authored and edited books.
The collections supplement official records created and maintained by administrative and academic units. Stony Brook University has a decentralized records management system. The University Archives do not have oversight of, or management of records. Record access and retention at Stony Brook University is under the aegis of Audit Management and Advisory Services.
ACCESS
Collections can be located in SBU Libraries' discovery catalog, SEARCH. For preservation reasons, the collections can not be borrowed, but collections can be requested and consulted in our reading room by appointment, or scanned to the extent that copyright and/or physical condition permits.
