Extent,Scope, and Content Note
The collection is comprised of six linear feet of: research notes; journals; correspondence; documents; newspaper clippings; newsletters; publicity files; and ephemeral material on early Long Island and regional gravestones with an emphasis on colonial stones, ca. 1680 to 1810. A significant portion of the collection is photographs of headstones that were taken by Welch.

Arrangement and Processing Note
The collection is arranged in series order by subject and format. The collection was processed by intern Diane Holliday, intern and Kristen J. Nyitray, with assistance from Lynn Toscano and Danielle Driscoll, student assistant. Updated by Kristen J. Nyitray in April 2019.

Historical Note
Richard F. Welch is a historian of American history, western civilization, and Irish history. He taught at the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University and at Farmingdale State College. The author of several books and articles, Welch also worked as a historical consultant, museum exhibit curator, and editor of Long Island Forum, a regional history magazine.
