Historical Note Aaron Kramer (1921-1997) received his Ph.D. from New York University in 1966 and resided
in Oakdale, Long Island, New York from 1971 until his death in April 1997. He taught
English at Dowling College from 1961 through 1992. After retirement, he taught part-time
as a professor emeritus. Kramer contributed significantly to the study of verse. He
established a poetry therapy program at Hillside Hospital in Glen Oaks and directed
similar programs at Cleary School for the Deaf and the Central Islip State Hospital.
In addition, he produced radio poetry programs and was a judge in various competitions.
An accomplished poet himself, his verse was published in volumes such as Roll the
Forbidden Drums!, The Tune of the Calliope, Carousel Parkway, The Burning Bush, On
the Way to Palermo, Indigo and Other Poems, and Regrouping. An editor and translator
as well, he published The Last Lullaby: Poems of the Holocaust, Rilke: Visions of
Christ, Poetry Therapy (with others), Der Kaiser von Atlantis, and Dora Teitelboim:
Selected Poems. Kramer stated that he had "been influenced by such poets as Walt Whitman,
Emily Dickinson, Herman Melville, and Gerard Manley Hopkins, in terms not of their
technique but their spirit. Although they would have enjoyed an appreciative audience,
they were willing either to publish their own work or to go unpublished through life.
These are among my heroes, and I consider it no accident that a later time has awarded
each of them the prizes and praises to which they did not aspire." (Source: Biographical
