Extent,Scope, and Content Note This collection consists of 3.3 linear ft. of correspondence, reports, pamphlets,
clippings, minutes, newsletters, and nature lists created or collected by Fletcher
of Nassau County, New York. A naturalist and environmentalist active in local bird
and garden clubs, the papers were created between 1914 and 1976.
Arrangement and Processing Note Processed by Kristen J. Nyitray and F. Berenice Baez-Revueltas, student assistant,
in May 2006. Finding aid revised and updated by Kristen J. Nyitray in June 2019.
The collection is arranged in alphabetical order by subject. Biographical materials
are filed in box 1.

Historical Note Mary T. MacMurray Fletcher (1899-1989) was a biology teacher at Richmond Hill High
School in Queens, New York for 35 years. She authored "A Survey of the Algae Found
in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden" in 1936. In 1957, she retired and moved to Seaford,
New York. There she served on the board of the Second District of the Federated Garden
Clubs of New York as both Bird and Conservation Chairperson. Ms. Fletcher was an active
member of the Seaford Garden Club, the Baldwin Bird Club, the Long Island Chapter
of the Nature Conservancy, the Adirondack Forest Preserve, the Audubon Society, and
its affiliated Lyman Langdon Bird Club. The files of her nature and conservation work
in Nassau County from 1956-1976 were donated to Stony Brook University in 1976 and
later that year she retired to Williamstown, MA.
