The American Association of University Women (AAUW) - Smithtown Area Branch was founded
in the early 1970s in Smithtown, New York. Fourteen women attended the first meeting
which was held on May 12, 1973 at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church in Smithtown. On
December 26, 1973, the Board of Directors of the AAUW in Washington, DC granted formal
recognition of the Smithtown Branch.
Today, the Smithtown Area Branch has over 80 members and is very active within the
local community as demonstrated by its involvement with Habitat for Humanity, the
American Cancer Society and The Suffolk County Coalition against Domestic Violence.
The branch year is July 1 through June 30. The requirement for membership is a 4-year
