SBU IEDM Membership Guidelines

A. Preamble
The mission of the Institute for Engineering-Driven Medicine (IEDM) is to
- Serve as the innovation ecosystem of convergence science by stimulating and enabling cross-cutting research that fuses life sciences, physical sciences and engineering.
- Conduct groundbreaking research leading to transformative therapies, new medical devices and inventive technologies that support patients and clinical care providers.
- Develop new educational programs that cultivate the next generation of clinician-scientists, who will convert technological advancements into effective therapies for patients and communities.
- Promote regional economic development by translating new discoveries into tangible products through a concentration on commercialization and entrepreneurship.
B. Membership Types
IEDM membership is divided into three categories: 1) Primary Membership, 2) Secondary Membership, and 3) Affiliate Membership.
Primary Members
Primary Members are i) Stony Brook University faculty associated with at least one
academic department, ii) conducting ongoing research pertinent to strategic foci of
the IEDM, iii) whose research will be housed within the IDIME building, upon its construction.
Secondary Members
Secondary Members are i) Stony Brook University faculty associated with at least one
academic department, ii) conducting research interactively or directly supportive
of the overall mission of the IEDM but not necessarily housed in the IDIME building.
Affiliate Members
Affiliate Members are i) conducting research related to the overall mission of the
IEDM.
C. Application Guidelines
All applications for IEDM Membership must be directed to IEDM via iedm@stonybrook.edu, and a membership committee consisting Co-Directors Joel Saltz and Yuefan Deng and other relevant faulty will review the applications. Applications must consist of: i) a cover letter indicating membership category and why, ii) a resume, iii) a letter of recommendation provided by a current IEDM member.
Applications will be reviewed, and admission status determined, by the membership committee, within one month of completion of an application.
