Intensive English Programs

6 week program

 

GSI offers two programs for students aiming to improve their academic English skills.  All programs are run by the Intensive English Center (IEC).  Learn more  below to choose the program that is right for you!

  • INTENSIVE ENGLISH

    intensive English Program (IEP)

    The Intensive English Program (IEP) is a full-time program run by the Intensive English Center (IEC).  It is designed to help international students with their academic English skills, communicative strategies, and intercultural competence.

    Any students interested in improving their English language skills for personal, professional, or academic purposes are encouraged to enroll.  There are no language proficiency or academic requirements.

    Students participating in University Preparation 1 (UP 1) during GSI will follow the IEP schedule.

    Course Description

    Upon entering the Intensive English Program, new students will be required to take an English placement exam to ensure they are placed in the proper level in the Intensive English Center (IEC)'s curriculum sequence.  Additional levels may be offered based on student demand.

    High Intermediate Advanced

    Schedule (Tentative)

    • Classes will meet Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am - 2:30 pm.
    • Special lectures by distinguished faculty or administrators  may be offered from 1:00 - 2:30 pm and all students are required to attend. 
    • On Fridays and weekends, participants will attend tutoring, optional field trips, and cultural events planned by GSI and will have free time to enjoy activities of their own choice.

    REQUIREMENTS

    UP1

    Students participating in UP1 during GSI will follow the Intensive English Program (IEP) schedule.  UP1 students will be registered full-time in the IEC 103 course. 

    STEP UP
      • Achieve a B or better in IEC 103 to advance to UP2 in the Fall Semester.

    Students participating in UP2 during GSI will enroll the following courses:

      • IEC 104 Advanced Academic English Course
      • 3-Credit Academic Course

      • Achieve a B or better in IEC 104
      • Achieve a C or better in Credit Courses

    Achieve a B or better in IEC 104 and a C or better in credit courses to matriculate to Undergraduate Studies in the Fall Semester.
