Our Commitment to Diversity
The Graduate Program in Genetics is an interdepartmental, interinstitutional course of study leading to a doctoral degree. As part of its responsibility in the fight against racism and other inequalities that affect individuals in our community, the Program has created JUST, Justice for the Underserved in STEM. The mission of this student/faculty-led committee is to educate graduate students, laboratory personnel, and faculty about diverse identities among people in STEM and how they intersect.
We are actively trying to improve the inclusivity of our environment for everyone, regardless of one's race, color, sex, age, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, disability, political affiliation, socioeconomic status, pregnancy status, familial status, veterans' status, or genetic information. We believe the creation of such an environment is essential for the successful realization of the Program's purpose to prepare scientists for an increasingly diverse, globalized, and connected world. The Genetics Program strives to reduce barriers to access, challenge systems of oppression, and advocate for our students' success.
The JUST website lists many valuable resources for support of student diversity and success, as does the website of Stony Brook University's Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Intercultural Initiatives.
