Federal Grants and Scholarships
- Program Detail & Eligibility:
Available to matriculated undergraduates who have NOT earned a first bachelor’s degree. Eligibility is determined by a federal formula. You must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
Award Limits:
2023-2024 academic year amounts for a full-time undergraduate range from $767 to $7,395.
2022-2023 academic year amounts for a full-time undergraduate range from $692 to $6,895.
Once you have received a Pell Grant for 12 semesters, or the equivalent, you are no longer eligible for additional Pell Grants.

File the Free Application for Federal Student AID (FAFSA) with Stony Brook's School Code 002838.
- Program Detail & Eligibility:
Available to matriculated undergraduates who have NOT earned a first bachelor’s degree and who demonstrate exceptional financial need. You must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
Award Limits:
Awards can range from $200 to $4000 per year.
The average yearly award at Stony Brook is $500. This is due to a limited amount of federal funding.
How to Apply:
File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) With Stony Brook's School Code 002838:
Priority is given to students who file their FAFSA before the March 15th deadline.
Program Details & Eligibility:
Pell eligible students whose parent or guardian died in the line of duty while performing as a public safety officer are eligible to receive the maximum Pell Grant for the award year. In order to qualify, students must:
- Be eligible for Pell based on current valid FAFSA information
- Have an Expected Family Contribution (calculated from their current valid FAFSA) greater than zero
- Must be less than 24 years old or were enrolled at an institution of higher education at the time of his or her parent or guardian’s death
Award Limits:
Eligible students will receive the maximum Pell Grant for his or her enrollment status and cost of attendance. Additional information regarding the dollar amount for the awards can be found on our Federal Pell Grant Semester Award Look Up Chart page.
How to Apply:
Contact our office to speak with a financial aid advisor. Advisors will add a To Do List item to your SOLAR account that will specify the documentation needed to determine eligibility for this scholarship.
