Dissertation Fellowship

The mission of the Turner Dissertation Fellowship opportunity is to provide support to students from historically excluded groups and otherwise disadvantaged communities in the preparation of their dissertation. Turner Dissertation Award Fellows represent the Fellowship Program in various academic disciplines and specializations across the university. This opportunity is available to Stony Brook University Graduate Students who have not previously been supported by the Turner Fellowship Program.

Awards

  • The number of awards granted annually will be based on the budgets for the coming year.
  • Awards can be either one or two years in length depending on the outline of support being provided
  • Recipients must be registered for full-time study by day 15 of each semester to maintain eligibility.

Nomination Eligibility

  1. Be U.S. Citizens or have Permanent Resident status
  2. Currently matriculated doctoral student at Stony Brook University
  3. Advancement to Candidacy (G5) prior to the start of the requested semester of fellowship distribution
  4. Demonstrate how they have overcome a disadvantage or other impediment to success in higher education. Candidates must also demonstrate a commitment to contributing to the diversity of the student body by facilitating and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in their academic programs and campus activities. 

Even though financial need is not a requirement for program eligibility, departments may utilize economic disadvantage as a basis for eligibility.

Preference Requirements 

Preference will be given to nominees who are: 

  1. SUNY alumni, and/or Fellows. 
  2. From a low-income background (e.g., Pell-eligible as undergraduates), were first-generation college students (students whose parents have not earned a bachelor’s degree), have overcome adversity, are AmeriCorps alumni, or are veterans.

All application submissions will be assessed and evaluated in accordance with the required eligibility criteria.

Current Stony Brook University graduate scholars who wish to be nominated for the Turner Dissertation Fellowship should consult with their Graduate Program Director.
