Undergraduate Programs in Studio Art
Embark on a transformative journey into the world of art with our Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art, where creativity meets technical mastery and theoretical knowledge. Our program is meticulously designed to ignite passion, foster creativity, and cultivate the technical skills necessary for artistic excellence. With a curriculum that demands not just participation but immersion, students dive into the depths of drawing, design, painting, sculpture, and digital arts and beyond—encompassing the broad spectrum of traditional and contemporary art forms.
Foundation Courses: Your artistic voyage begins with foundational courses in drawing and design, where the core principles of art are explored, setting the stage for all future creations. Choose from introductory courses such as Foundations of Drawing, Idea and Form, and Introductory Electronic Media, designed to ground you in the essentials while sparking your creative curiosity.
Areas of Concentration: Delve deeper into your chosen field with specialized tracks offering extensive studies in Painting, Drawing, and Printmaking; Electronic Media and Photography; or Sculpture and Ceramic Sculpture. With at least four upper-division studio classes, our program encourages profound engagement in your specialty, supported by a variety of courses ranging from traditional techniques to avant-garde digital media. (Minimum of six (6) classes (18 credits): four (4) of which should be upper-division studio classes)
Electives and Art History: Broaden your horizons and enrich your artistic vocabulary with seven additional studio classes (21credits) from any concentration, complemented by a rigorous foundation in art history and criticism (12 credits). Our curriculum ensures a holistic understanding of art’s evolution, with a special emphasis on modernism, preparing you for a thoughtful and informed art practice.
Writing and Criticism: As art is not just made but also discussed and critiqued, our program includes a unique Upper-Division Writing/WRTD Requirement. This ensures that graduates are not just skilled artists but also articulate critics and thinkers, capable of engaging with and contributing to the discourse surrounding art.
Honours Program: For those aspiring to reach the pinnacle of academic and artistic achievement, our honours program offers the chance to undertake ambitious projects or even mount a one-person show, guided and evaluated by our distinguished faculty.
With a commitment to excellence, our program is tailored for those who aspire not just to create art, but to live it. Our graduates emerge not just as artists, but as innovators and visionaries, ready to make their mark on the world. Join us at Stony Brook, and turn your passion for art into a lifelong career and calling.
