Undergraduate

Think visually. Create fearlessly. Shape culture.
At Stony Brook, creativity is how we learn to see, question, and transform the world around us. Our undergraduate programs in Studio Art, Art History and Criticism, and Media, Art, Culture bring together making and thinking in ways that reflect the complexity of today’s visual culture.
In Studio Art, students work across traditional and experimental media — from drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, and printmaking to digital photography, illustration, and animation. Our maker spaces also support projects in electronics, coding, AI, and interactivity, encouraging collaboration between art, science, and technology.
In Art History and Criticism, students explore how images, objects, and spaces shape and are shaped by societies across time and place. Courses span ancient to contemporary worlds, cultivating visual literacy, critical writing, and curatorial insight.
Through Media, Art, Culture, students connect creative practice with theory, working across photography, video, design, and digital media while examining how media and technology transform communication, identity, and community.
Together, these programs prepare the next generation of artists, historians, and cultural thinkers to engage a rapidly changing world with imagination, skill, and purpose.
