MA-TESOL
- MA-TESOL 30 credits
- MA-TESOL 48 credits (MA plus New York State TESOL Certification preK-12)
The MA-TESOL Program is a professional education program designed to prepare graduate students to teach English to speakers of other languages. A unique feature of our program is its combination of extensive field experience and clinical practice with grounding in intellectually rigorous coursework based in the scientific study of language structure, language use, and language acquisition.
There are two tracks. One is a 48 credit track that leads to the MA-TESOL degree plus New York State teacher certification. This is the appropriate track for those who are pursuing a MA degree and NYS teacher certification for the first time. The other is a 30 credit track and leads to the MA-TESOL degree only. This track is intended for those who already hold NYS teacher certification in an area other than TESOL and who wish to obtain TESOL certification, or those who are not interested in NYS teacher certification. Upon completion of the MA 30 credit degree, students can apply directly to New York State for alternate route certification in TESOL (see the FAQs).

Per federal regulations on state authorization (34 CFR 600.9) and disclosure of information about licensed programs (34 CFR 668.43), SUNY Stony Brook has determined that its educational programs in initial teacher certification curricula, if successfully completed, are sufficient to meet the licensure and certification requirements for an initial teaching certification license in New York State.
Enrolled out-of-state students and prospective students are strongly encouraged to contact their state’s licensure entity to review all licensure and certification requirements imposed by their state(s) of choice.
Visit the New York State Education Department's Office of Teaching Initiatives website for complete details on teacher certification requirements.
