Ana Manas Lopez

Ana Manas Lopez lecturer in the TESOL program, joined the Linguistics Department in August 2024 as a full-time faculty member. She is a double alumna of SBU (BA in Linguistics and MA in TESOL).

After graduating with her TESOL degree, Ana taught English as a New Language (ENL) and worked directly with students of various levels in high needs school districts on Long Island. She has extensive experience with SIFE students (Students with Interrupted Formal Education), bilingual classroom settings, as well as teaching ENL students with special education needs. She has also taught adult ENL to students at an alternative high school. Through her own experience as an ENL student and educator, Ana is extremely passionate about this field.

Prior to becoming a full-time faculty member, Ana taught part-time in the SBU TESOL program for several years. Currently, she teaches pedagogy courses in the program (Methods 1 and Methods 2) and other required courses for the program such as Bilingualism, TESOL and Technology, and a course on assessments in TESOL. Her specific interests include second language acquisition and literacy development with SIFEs.

During her tenure in the K-12 classroom, Ana focused on constantly developing varied assessments for all ENL proficiency and ability levels. She has served as a textbook reviewer, facilitated and presented multiple Professional Development workshops, attended numerous professional conferences, and has been trained by some of the most influential educators in the United States.
