  In honor of Black History Month and Women's History Month, please join us for a lively virtual discussion of "Glory in Their Spirit", a book by Sandra M. Bolzenius that tells the story of four Black women who served in the Women's Army Corps during World War II and staged a courageous strike against the segregated military.

  Access to the E-book is provided through University Libraries. Use this link.

  Please register ahead of time using this Zoom Registration link. 

  
  It is not necessary to finish the book in order to join our discussion. Feel free to make note of a passage from the book that is interesting or meaningful to you and share it by reading aloud during our discussion.
  As a supplement or alternative to reading the book, there is a 40 minute video of the author talking about the book on C-SPAN.

  In honor of Women's History Month, the Center for Civic Justice is hosting a panel discussion featuring a virtual keynote from Tina Tchen, Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy and Impact Officer for the Obama Foundation, and three accomplished members of our Stony Brook community who will speak to the theme, Her Impact: Women Driving Change. 
   
  Our panelists include Lynda Perdoma-Ayala, Chair of the Suffolk County Human Rights Commission and former Administrative Department Head in the Department of Pharmacological Sciences, Carolyn Peabody, Director of the Community, Policy and Political Social Action Specialization in the School of Social Welfare, and Rahsmia Zatar, Executive Director of S.T.R.O.N.G. Youth.
   
  Participants will learn meaningful ways that they can get involved to create impactful change in their local and global communities.

Participants will engage in meaningful discussions about the unique challenges and opportunities women encounter in the workplace. Additionally, this event will provide valuable insights into available internships and job opportunities.

   

  Agenda Highlights:

  Women Leaders Panel - Panelists to be determined

   

  Industry Breakout Sessions:

  Professionals from diverse industries will lead small group discussions in breakout rooms with 6-8 students, grouped by career interest. Each professional will give a brief introduction, address selected topics listed below, and share information on internship and job openings.

   

  Key Discussion Topics:

  • Balancing It All: Exploring work-life balance and its impact on career success.
  • Intersections of Identity: Navigating the workplace as a woman, especially when also identifying as LGBTQ+, a person of color, or holding specific religious beliefs.
  • Cultural Differences: How cultural backgrounds shape workplace dynamics among women.
  • Closing the Wage Gap: Industry efforts to address wage disparities and ways women can advocate for equitable pay.
