Newly Admitted Students: Next Steps

To get you started, make sure you complete the following once admitted:

Pay your tuition deposit on SOLAR.
Set Up Your NetID and NetID Password.
Address any Holds on your SOLAR Account.
Submit ALL of your required Health Documents:

-MMR
-Meningitis
-Health Insurance

Your Undergraduate College

As an incoming first-year student, you will be supported through an Undergraduate College (UGC) which determines your academic advisors, college community, and typically your residential community. You will automatically be assigned to one of the Undergraduate Colleges based on your academic major (with the exception of International Students):

- Special Populations - Majors Affiliated: International Students, Undeclared\General
- Creativity, Technology, and Innovation - Majors Affiliated: Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics, Astronomy, Geology, Earth and Space Sciences, Business, Economics, Math
- Global Health, Wellness, and Community - Majors Affiliated: Biology, Health Science, Respiratory Sciences, Clinical Lab Sciences, SOMAS, AOI Nursing
- Social Justice, Equity, and Ethics - Majors Affiliated: Arts, Music, Linguistics, English, Africana Studies, Languages, History, Political Science, Journalism, Communication, Multidisciplinary Studies, Women Studies, Creative Writing, Psychology, Social Work, Anthropology, Human Evolutionary Biology

Please note: If you are in any of the following programs (EOP, Athletics, Simons STEM Scholars, Honors College, University Scholars, or WISE) or in a major in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, you will be supported through your program’s advising unit.

New Student Registration

To register for your first semester of classes, first-year students will attend a required registration workshop taking place in July/August.

In order to register for a registration workshop, students must complete the following:

Complete your Advising Planning Form (APF) on your SBUStart Portal to ensure you are registered in the appropriate courses.

The Advising Planning Form will:
- Confirm your intended major
- Allow you to self-report AP and transfer credits
- Direct you to sign up for the Placement Exams you need
New students are required to take different placement exams to ensure they are placed in the proper courses Students may have to take up to 4 different placement exams which are described below.
For more information about placement/preparation exams, please refer to the Advising Planning Form.
You should self report ALL Transfer and AP Credits on your Advising Planning Form. In addition, if you have AP Math or Chemistry, please email a copy of your scores to ucolleges@stonybrook.edu .

Registration Workshops

Your Advisors and Registration Student Assistants will be enrolling you in your required courses. Once you complete all of the required tasks, you will be prompted to select a Registration Workshop Date.

Workshops are virtual via Zoom and first-come, first-serve. Complete all of your placement exams and matriculated checklist items in your SBUStart Portal as soon as possible to receive priority registration in classes!

Please check your Stony Brook Email for Advising Information and Registration Workshop Information. The email will come from ucolleges@stonybrook.edu.

Registration for College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Honors, University Scholars, and WISE Students

Special Populations (Honors, University Scholars, WISE, and Simons STEM Scholars) will have their Registration during July. More information to be provided from your program.

New Seawolf Welcome Week

All new first year students at Stony Brook University will participate in a multi-part orientation. New Seawolf Orientation is required for all new first year students and consists of Seawolf Foundations online orientation modules, participation in the advising and registration process with your Undergraduate College, virtual group workshops including Seawolf Connections and commuter/resident panel, and New Seawolf Welcome Week.

The Undergraduate Colleges (UGC's) are made up of 4 vibrant academic communities that offer individualized support and academic services to support your success as a student in your first and second year at Stony Brook. Each Undergraduate College has a theme that allows students to explore a broad topic beyond your major. Through our first-year seminars, personalized academic advising, and a series of social events, your Undergraduate College will provide you with a smaller college experience within a large research university. Each of the 4 UGC’s is home to a diverse group of students from various assigned majors and backgrounds. The UGC's are a program designed for first and second year students. However, if you choose, there are many ways to expand your involvement in the Undergraduate Colleges. Some examples are: apply to be an Undergraduate College Fellow or a Registration Student Assistant.
Yes. All students, regardless of what UGC they are in, must take a first-year seminar 101 course in the fall and a first-year seminar 102 course during the spring semester. The SBU 101 class is geared toward educating first year students about the resources available to them at Stony Brook, and also familiarizing them with the campus culture and building functional academic skills. The SBU 102 course is a unique opportunity for first year students to interact with experienced faculty in a small group setting. The SBU 102 courses are designed around a very specific topic that the faculty has expertise in and change from year to year. Each college has a wide range of programs and activities that students are encouraged to attend. Many students participate in events hosted by other UGC's as well. In addition to students can apply to be an Undergraduate College Fellow. Opportunities for involvement are abundant, and those students interested in taking advantage of them should contact their Advisors.
