Subject: IMPORTANT: Flooding on Campus - Housing Updates
Last night, torrential rain caused significant flooding in the local region and in several Stony Brook campus buildings and residence halls. We sincerely hope that you and your families are safe and have experienced limited disruptions. A full assessment of the impact across our campus is underway, and given this unforeseen emergency situation, we are pausing our Monday and Tuesday check-in regardless of your housing assignment. We will continue to update you daily with more information.
Your safety is our top priority. Although most of the campus is operational, we know that the Mendelsohn community, including Ammann, Gray, Irving, and O’Neill halls, do not have power, and the lower level of Ammann and Gray experienced significant flooding. Our Campus Operations and Maintenance teams are on scene and working hard assessing the damage and determining the timeline for repairs.
We understand the stress that this must be causing, and we are doing everything in our power to respond quickly and thoroughly, including:
-
-
We are currently working to reassign impacted students to available spaces on-campus.
-
We are designating additional rooms as temporary triples, primarily in first-year communities. All students in these tripled rooms will receive an approximate 15% reduction of the room rate credited to their account for the days the room was designated as a temporary triple. If demand for campus housing remains high, the temporary triple room could remain occupied with three residents for the academic year.

-
We are implementing a $5,000 cancellation incentive for any new or continuing undergraduate resident who has not moved into their Fall 2024 assignment. If this option is of interest to you, fill out this link. Once we assess the need, we will contact individuals with further instructions on how to cancel and receive this incentive. Completing the form does not guarantee you will be selected. Should you need housing again in the future, you will be able to participate in Room Selection for 2025-2026.

We sincerely apologize for this disruption and are working around the clock to find a solution to this unexpected situation. Please continue to check your Stony Brook email for daily updates.
Sincerely,
Rick Gatteau, PhD Vice President for Student Affairs
Catherine-Mary Rivera Assistant Vice President for Campus Residences
