Mendelsohn Community Update

Subject: Mendelsohn Community Building Updates

Dear Seawolves,

Our team is working around the clock to assess and repair the damages caused by the storm.  Due to the extent of the water and electrical damage in the basement areas of Mendelsohn community -- Irving, O’Neill, Gray, and Ammann residence halls -- we are awaiting more information on when each of the buildings will be back online.  We need to ensure that the buildings are safe, including the fire and security systems, before we allow residents to return.

In addition, once the buildings reopen, we expect that wifi likely will not be available for several days while repairs are made, but there are many wifi access points throughout the campus for your use.

If you completed the request form sent out earlier today, we have been or are completing the process of notifying you of your assigned temporary spaces in other residence halls across our campus.  Please look for an email from a Campus Residences area office.  We also know that many of you are staying with family or friends off-campus or have traveled home for the long holiday weekend.

We recognize this has been a difficult situation, and appreciate your resilience in managing through this challenge.  For all Mendelsohn community residents, we will be providing a housing credit to your Stony Brook account from today through the date that your assigned residence hall reopens, whether you moved to another campus location, are staying with people off-campus, or traveled home.  More details on the date when this housing credit will be issued  will be shared with you after your residence hall reopens.

As we noted in our earlier email this morning, you were not required to attend class today or tomorrow if you were impacted by the flood, but please communicate with your instructors to let them know the reason for your absence and to get updates on any missed classwork.

Your in-hall residential staff and RAs are available to assist with any needs or questions, so please feel free to reach out.  In addition, we will send you another update when we have more information, and no later than Sunday night, so please check your Stony Brook email periodically.

Sincerely,

Rick Gatteau, PhD
Vice President for Students Affairs
