Eligibility and Billing:
All enrolled Stony Brook University students are required to pay the Counseling and Health Fee. This is not a health insurance premium—it supports services offered by Student Health Services (SHS), Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), and other preventive health initiatives. The fee covers all visits and most services at no additional cost.
During the fall and spring semesters, the Counseling and Health Fee provides access to services throughout the academic year. Students taking summer classes—or those seeking services over the summer without being enrolled—must pay a separate Summer Counseling and Health Fee.
Students who have paid the Counseling and Health Fee—regardless of undergraduate or graduate status, enrollment level (full-time or part-time), or housing status (resident or commuter)—are eligible for CAPS services.
The following are not eligible for services at CAPS: Students enrolled in SONGDO, SUTRA, OLLI, or Certificate Programs, visiting scholars, faculty and staff, and members of the general public.
Financial Needs
The Counseling and Health Fee covers the great majority of services at CAPS, including
- Individual therapy
- Couples therapy
- Group therapy
- Workshops
- Psychiatric evaluations and treatment
- Crisis intervention
- Case management
While most services are covered, students may incur charges in the following cases:
- Prescription Medications – Medications prescribed by CAPS psychiatric providers may require out-of-pocket payment or be billed through the student's health insurance.
- Off-Campus Referrals – Services from external providers, following a CAPS referral, may involve additional fees.
Any potential costs will be clearly communicated to students before services are provided.
