Psychiatry Services and Medication Management
The CAPS psychiatric team provides medication management services for students who may benefit from psychotropic medication to support their mental health. Referrals for psychiatric evaluations and medication consultations are made by the CAPS counseling team. If you’ve been referred for psychiatric services by a counselor outside of CAPS, you will still need to be evaluated by a CAPS provider before receiving care.
Please note that psychiatric consultations at CAPS are free for all eligible students. However, medications are not covered by your Student Health Fee and must be paid for either out of pocket or through your health insurance. Many commonly prescribed medications are available through the Student Health Services pharmacy, although controlled substances are not dispensed there.
Stimulant Medication Policy
CAPS does not prescribe stimulant medications (e.g., Adderall, Ritalin, Concerta)
without a current neuropsychological evaluation. If you are seeking this type of evaluation,
you may contact:
Krasner Psychological Center
Located in the Psychology B Building on West Campus
Phone: (631) 632-7830
You may also pursue testing through an off-campus provider. Before scheduling an evaluation, we recommend checking with your health insurance provider to understand what services are covered and any out-of-pocket costs, as neuropsychological testing can be expensive. Please be aware that the Krasner Center does not accept insurance but does offer discounted rates for testing.
