Handshake is the only job posting site at Stony Brook University and serves as the Career Center's recruiting and career services platform for students, alumni and employers. You can look for jobs, internships, and volunteer opportunities. You can also search for employers, attend a job fair, or sign up for career coaching appointments.

    How to Search for On Campus Jobs and Internships

    Learn about requirements, types of positions are available, how many hours a week before you start your search for on campus jobs on Handshake.

    Review Requirements for Working On Campus

    Tips:
    • Check frequently for new opportunities especially at the start of the fall semester and spring semester
    • Sort by "Application deadline" instead of "Relevance" to see which deadline is coming up
    • Review if the position is open for undergraduate and/or graduate students at the bottom of the post under "candidate preferences"

    • Login to Handshake
    • Select "Jobs"
    • Navigate to "All filters"
    • Select "On Campus"
    • In "All filters",  scroll to "Employers" and type in "Stony Brook University"
    • You can then click "Show results" to see the positions

    Please note: Only students who have been awarded and accepted federal work study funding will see an option to check "Work study" under "All filters".

    • Select "Jobs
    • Navigate to "All filters"
    • Scroll down to "Labeled by your school" and type in "on-campus internships"
    • Click "Show results" to view all available on-campus internships

    Attend a Job and Internship Fair

    The Career Center hosts a job and internship fair usually in the first week of the semester in both the fall and spring.  On campus departments are invited to connect with students who are looking for opportunities.

    • Login to Handshake
    • Navigate to "Events"
    • Click on "Category"
    • Select the box for "Career fair
    • Click "More filters" and check "Posted by my school"

  • Preparing Your Application

    Tailor Your Resume

    A resume serves one purpose—to get you an interview. You want to make sure your resume shows the skills that are connected to the position. You can find some general tips below:

    • Customize your application materials by having a tailored resume to the position (in place of submitting the same resume to all positions)
    • Identify what skills and experiences you can connect with each job specifically
    • Research the department on their website to understand more about them and their goals
    • Review your resume and other application materials with the Career Center and others
    • Save the job description to refer back to for an interview
    • Apply by submitting your resume and other application materials with your first and last name as a PDF (to ensure it will have the same formatting)

    Getting Started:

    We do not recommend using templates. You would want to build your resume in a blank document in Google Docs or Microsoft Word.

    Ace Your Interview

    You got an interview! Let's review some next steps on how to best prepare for an interview.

    • Review the customized application materials (resume, cover letter, etc.) and the job description and information about the department
    • Plan on arriving 15 minutes early (if in-person, give yourself time to find the location and if virtual, check your technology and set up your location)
    • Identify what skills are most connected to the position and think about specific examples from past experiences you could talk about
    • Practice! Talking about your skills outloud is the best way to feel more confident during the interview
    • Send a thank you note after the interview if possible (within 24 hours)
