andrew singerDean, College of Engineering and Applied Sciences
Andrew Singer was named Dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering effective July 10, 2023.

A nationally recognized scholar, educational innovator, and technology entrepreneur, Dean Singer joined Stony Brook from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, where he served as the Fox Family Endowed Professor, associate dean for Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the Grainger College of Engineering, and professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. In his role as associate dean, he oversaw the innovation and entrepreneurship programs of the Grainger College of Engineering and played a key role in the development of a vibrant innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem in the region and the state. He held several administrative positions at the college, campus, and system level, with an emphasis on broadening participation of underrepresented groups in the innovation and technology commercialization enterprises at the regional, state, and national levels. He played a leadership role in the development of several large capital projects on the Urbana campus, including the $50M Siebel Center for Design, a $75M Biomedical Translational Research Facility in the medical district, and a $25M Graduation Facility in the Research Park.

An active researcher, with interests in signal processing and communication systems, audio and undersea acoustics, and financial modeling, Singer has received over $35M in research funding from the National Science Foundation, Office of Naval Research, DARPA, and other federal and industry sources. He has published widely, authoring five chapters in textbooks and more than 270 peer-reviewed journal and conference articles and 12 issued US patents.

Singer co-founded Intersymbol Communications, a semiconductor IC company for optical communications, acquired by Finisar Corporation (now II-VI). He also co-founded OceanComm, a provider of high-bandwidth underwater acoustic communications technology for subsea industries. Prior to his position at the University of Illinois, Singer served as a research scientist at Sanders, a Lockheed-Martin Company in Manchester, NH, where he developed LIDAR, SONAR, and wireless communication systems.

Singer earned his SB, SM and PhD degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, all in electrical engineering and computer science.

Throughout his career, Singer has received a number of awards for his research, including
the National Science Foundation CAREER Award, Xerox Faculty Research Award, and best paper awards from the IEEE Signal Processing Society and Solid-State Circuits Society.

He was elected Fellow of the IEEE “for contributions to signal processing techniques for digital communication,” and has served as a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Signal Processing Society.
