Reflection and Remembrance
September 9, 2024
To the Stony Brook Campus Community,
This coming Wednesday, we will join communities throughout New York, across our nation and the world to pause and remember the events of 9/11. Time has not dimmed our memories or eased the pain of loss, and as we join together as a campus community, our shared experiences can offer a tremendous source of strength. In times of hardship, let us remember that our greatest asset is each other.
Here at Stony Brook, members of the campus community are invited to visit the Memorial Arch near the Humanities Building from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm for quiet contemplation and reflection. There, you will have the opportunity to place a white rose amongst the grove of trees planted to remember, celebrate lives, and honor the legacies of the 21 Stony Brook alumni who perished in the attacks on 9/11 and whose names are engraved on the Memorial Arch. Additionally, on Wednesday morning, the campus chimes will ring 21 times at 8:46 am.
Every day, and especially on a day that may prove to be difficult for many, please make an extra effort to connect with colleagues and classmates to share a kind word, thought or deed. Together, we will uplift one another and build a brighter future. Thank you for all you do for Stony Brook.
Sincerely,
Richard L. McCormick
Interim President
