Provost Office Update
January 18, 2022
Dear Colleagues,
Paul Goldbart is stepping down as Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic
Affairs, effective February 2. After almost twenty years in academic and research
leadership positions, two of them under Covid, Paul has decided to return to his core
passions – research and teaching – here at Stony Brook University. I am grateful for
his many contributions as Provost over the past year. Under his leadership the Provost’s
Office built the Faculty Pathways program; collaborated on the Research Acceleration,
Tiger Teams and Governors Island initiatives and numerous advancement activities;
helped to launch the all-funds, multi-year, strategic budgeting process; and created
Connections at the Wang Center. Paul also appointed key personnel in the Provost’s
Office and at SUNY Korea, and of course partnered with colleagues in the Provost’s
Office and across the campus.
As a highly regarded and widely published physicist, Paul will continue to serve Stony
Brook University as a faculty member and also will assume a new assignment as Special
Advisor for Research through May, 2022.
Mónica Bugallo has agreed to continue to serve as Interim Provost as we consider
next steps and prepare to launch a national search for this role. We will announce
details on these plans in the near future.
Please join me in thanking Paul for his service as Provost and wishing him all the
best in his scholarly pursuits.
Regards,
Maurie McInnis
President
