Fall 2024 Pre-Health Workshops

Series 1: Beginning Stages of Your Pre-Health Journey

Series 1 is for anyone who is in their early stages of figuring out their pre-health path. These workshops/events are targeted toward students who are still deciding which area in healthcare they are interested in. In this series, you will learn about different programs offered at SBU and the general information of what it means to be pre-health at SBU.

How to Gain Experiences and Plan Ahead Academically as a Pre-Health Student

Description: Are you a pre-health student seeking healthcare-related experience or interested in learning about the advising services at SBU to support your academic path and future planning?

I highly encourage all pre-health students to attend this virtual workshop which will be hosted by the Career Center and Academic Transfer and Advising Services (ATAS).

Whether you plan to attend graduate school, apply to professional programs, or enter the workforce, you will need experiences to showcase your passion, interest, and involvement in the field. This workshop will help students learn about experiences that can be gained on and off campus in areas such as volunteering, leadership, internships, and more. Additionally, you will be able to get your pre-health academic questions answered and learn about the services to support you.

Come with questions and be ready to gain advice, resources, and assistance to support your academic journey and involvement in healthcare experiences.

Pre-Health Academic Programs Panel

Date: Wednesday, November 11, 2024 at 1pm | Register via Handshake here

Location: SAC 302

Description: The SBU academic programs attending the panel are Clinical Lab Science (CLS), Respiratory Care (RC), and Health Science (HS).

There will be representatives from each program on the panel! Students attending this event will have direct access to learn about the academic programs, and the variety of healthcare career paths that each program leads to.

There will be several opportunities for students to ask questions about the programs, application process, classes, career outcomes, and more! And for those who may not have specific questions, we still encourage you to attend and gain insight on new avenues that may lead you down the path of finding your dream career in healthcare.

Do not miss out on the opportunity to connect with program leaders from Clinical Lab Science, Respiratory Care, and Health Science. This is a collaboartie event with the Career Center.

Series 2:Getting Ready to Apply To Health Graduate Programs

Series 2 is focused on preparing for future application cycles. Understanding how and when to apply is important and requires a lot of planning and preparation. This series will focus not only on the logistics of sending in applications to your desired program but also how to make a memorable impression to admission committees.

Virtual Mock Interview Day: Medical & Health Graduate Programs

DateWednesday, October 16, 2024 at 5:30 - 7pm (Students should anticipate to attend the entire time) ***Registration is required***

Fill out this form to reserve your spot!  We will close registration on October 4, 2024. However, if we reach our maximum number, registration will close early. 

Due to limited seats it is important if you register, you intend to participate in this event. Priority will be given to those first come, first serve.

Description: Are you applying to health-related professional/graduate programs like medical or dental school and/or current doctoral students in the field? Come practice your interviewing skills and get feedback from a professional in the field. Our interiewers are faculty from the School of Health Professions, current medical/ dental/ physisican assistant students who are at SBU's gradaute programs.

Seating is limited! To accommodate the growing number of mock interviews requests for health-related professional/graduate programs it is highly encouraging that you attend Mock Interview Day. If you can not make this event, you must email Kaitlyn.seitz@stonybrook.edu to deregister in order to give others a chance to attend the event. Short notice can result in deactivation of your Handshake account. 

The Timeline to Apply to Graduate Health Programs

Date: Wednesday, December 4, 2024 at 1pm 

Location: Virtual | Regsiter here 

Description: This workshop will review the components of what makes a competitive applicant for health graduate programs and the timeline when students will start the application process. Advisors will review topics including:

  • Sample timeline for academic requirements (ie, when to take pre-reqs, when do applications open, when do students typically take admissions test)
  • How to calculate science, non-science and cumulative GPA
  • Different standardized tests required by different programs (MCAT, DAT, OAT, GRE, Casper exam, PREview, etc.)

** These workshops are only open to Stony Brook students and alumni.**

Students pursuing health careers can major in many different disciplines, and work closely with Academic Advisors to complete the best courses in preparation for a future in healthcare.
