Citizens Police Academy

The Stony Brook University Citizens Police Academy is designed for undergraduate students to gain insight into the daily functions and responsibilities of our law enforcement personnel. Eligible candidates will be introduced to basic law enforcement concepts such as, police ethics, community policing, emergency management operations, and investigations. Candidates will also participate in interactive scenarios involving defensive tactics, vehicle and traffic stops, deadly physical force, FATS (Firearms Training Simulator), and active shooter incidents. The goal of the Citizens Police Academy is to give candidates a broad overview of law enforcement and to strengthen the bond between the police department and the community.

Eligible students can be enrolled into a 1-credit class that satisfies the EXP+ graduation requirement.

The Citizens Police Academy is a 12-week course that takes place on Tuesday evenings from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
