Mission Statement

The Mineral Physics Institute (MPI) is a research institute of Stony Brook University dedicated to understanding the present state of the Earth and planets from the surface to the core, as well as the evolution through time. We have achieved and maintained international leadership in the field of Mineral Physics over the past thirty years. Our approach is to study Earth/planetary materials under the pressures and temperatures found within their interior by conducting a wide variety of experimental and theoretical investigations. Our overarching goal is to provide a window into the deep interior of these bodies in order to gain a fuller understanding of the composition, structure as well as the past, present, and future processes that play a role in shaping the Earth and planetary bodies.
