Dilip Gersappe, Professor and Interim Chair

Welcome to the Department of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering at Stony Brook University. We offer graduate programs in Materials Science and Chemical Engineering and undergraduate programs in Engineering Science and Chemical and Molecular Engineering. A common theme in all our programs is that we integrate the research experience as part of our educational mission.  As a result, we have a vibrant, active department in which undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty and staff work together to tackle grand challenges s that require new materials and processes.

The strength of our Department is in our faculty and students. Our faculty have won numerous awards and accolades for their research. Our Department has a National Medal of Technology recipient, a member of the National Academy of Engineers, a Jefferson Fellow, four NSF-CAREER awardees and DOE Early Career awardee. Three of our faculty are Distinguished Professors, the highest and most prestigious rank offered by SUNY.

Our department is home to many research centers including a EFRC on Energy Storage technologies, the Center for Mesoscale Transport Properties, the Garcia Polymer Center and the Center for Thermal Spray Technologies. Our research successes are a direct result of the quality of our students. Our graduate students have won Distinguished Doctoral Thesis awards, NSF graduate fellowships, Electrochemical Society Fellowships and Graduate Student Teaching awards. Our undergraduate students have won awards ranging from a 1st place finish at the Chem-E Car competition at the regional AICHE meeting, URECA and BNL REU scholarship and awards for poster presentations at national conferences. We also benefit from having a close connection with Brookhaven National Labs, with a number of affiliated faculty, and students that utilize BNL facilities for their research.

Our undergraduate program in Engineering Science is designed to be customized, based on the interests of the student. Students can specialize in biomedical engineering, mechanical and manufacturing engineering, electrical engineering, materials science and engineering, nanoscale engineering, and engineering management. Reflecting the breadth and variety of topics falling within the domain of engineering science, this program also offers several minors that afford undergraduate students the opportunity to enhance their engineering or science studies with knowledge in a specific area.

The undergraduate Chemical and Molecular Engineering program emphasizes processes and effects that occur at the molecular level. The program teaches the molecular basis of chemical phenomena, control, and operations. The training in this program provides a rigorous background in the basic sciences in combination with core chemical engineering courses while emphasizing teamwork, creativity and ethics. Students can specialize in select areas of Chemical Engineering such as pharmacology, polymer science and tissue engineering.

Please look around our website and feel free to contact us if you have any questions. Please consider joining us, so that we can work together to develop the new materials and chemical processes that will ultimately tackle emerging problems. We are confident that this is a great place to start your Engineering journey!
