Group Therapy

We offer group therapy courses each year in February, July and September.  The number and type of courses offered varies each term.  They meet once per week and range in duration from 10 to 18 weeks.

Below is a list of what we typically offer:

Emotional Skills Group (12 sessions; 12 weeks)

Goals of the program:

  • Understand the different parts of an emotional experience
  • Learn skills for coping with strong emotions
  • Gain insight about behaviors driven by emotions

ADHD/Organizational/Executive Functioning Group (10 Sessions; 10 weeks) 

Goals of the program:

  • Understand the cognitive, behavioral and emotional aspects of ADHD.
  • Learn new skills, like time management, prioritizing tasks, and optimal study habits to improve functioning across domains (e.g., academic performance, day-to-day activities.)
  • Learn to manage better problems of attention and hyperactivity for students with ADHD.
  • Peer support to increase motivation to change and confidence in social situations.

Skills Training for Healthy Relationships Group (8 sessions; 8 weeks)

Goals of the program:

  • Training in relationship building skills.
  • Enhancing/navigating dating, romantic, and sexual relationships.
  • Learn to be the best partner you can be.

Cognitive Behavioral Group Therapy for Depression (15 weeks; 15 sessions)

Goals of the program:

  • Learn to use effective coping strategies to better deal with life stressors, promote positive outcomes in your daily life, and improve your mood
  • Increase the use of helpful thought processes
  • Strengthen your emotional control
  • Decrease behavioral and emotional avoidance
  • Learn to improve your interpersonal skills

Parent Management Training Group (10 sessions; 10 weeks)

Goals of the program:

  • Provide parents with skills to better manage their child's behavioral difficulties.

Group-Based Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Black Youth and Caregivers (12 weekly sessions)

*Please note: This group is being offered as part of a research study. Eligible families will be invited to complete pre- and posttreatment assessments and be offered the program free of charge.

Goals of the program for adolescents:

  • Learn information about childhood traumatic events and their impact on youth and families
  • Learn skills for identifying and coping with strong emotions and ongoing racial stressors
  • Learn how to replace negative thoughts with more helpful thoughts
  • Gain mastery over trauma reminders 
  • Learn safety skills

Goals of the program for caregivers:

    • Learn information about childhood traumatic events and their impact and youth and families
    • Process your own feelings and thoughts about your child's traumatic experiences
  • Learn skills for coping with strong emotions
  • Learn skills to help your child become more resilient to ongoing racial stressors
  • Learn parenting and communication skills for supporting their child's recovery
