Film Screening of Matteo Garrone's Pinocchio

Join us for an evening of Italian cinema, featuring a full screening of Matteo Garrone's Pinocchio. PhD student Anita Rescia (Hispanic Languages) will provide a brief introduction to the film. Please note that audio will be in Italian but English subtitles will be displayed for the duration of the film. Free and open to all. SBU students encouraged to attend.

Eve Straussman Pflanzer

Artemisia Gentileschi and Wily Women Artists of Italy, 1550 to 1776

Eve Strassman-Pflanzer is curator and head of Italian and Spanish paintings at the National Gallery of Art (Washington, DC). She will give a talk exploring the pathways and pitfalls for women artists in early modern Italy, revealing connections to the present and offering a portal to the past. While Artemisia Gentileschi is the most famous, there were hundreds of other women who worked as artists in the period who have yet to receive their due. Free and open to all. SBU students encouraged to attend.

Pinocchio, Past and Present

Anita Rescia is a PhD student and language instructor at Stony Brook University in the Department of Hispanic Languages and Literature. She will give a lecture exploring the original themes of Pinocchio, including honesty, hard work, respect, and, above all, obedience, as well as why these ideals were important in their original context (Carlo Collodi's 1883 The Adventures of Pinocchio). SBU students encouraged to attend.

CommUniversity Day was a rousing success!

Several hundred people braved the rain and participated in the Center's table activities. Congratulations to our three LEGO mini-Vespa winners Bin C., Grayson F., and Richard M., and the winner of our trivia basket of Italian goodies, Zach S. There were 387 pieces of pasta in the jar.

The Center Welcomes new Mignone Fellow Sophia Scala!

Scala is a recent graduate of Rutgers University. She has joined SBU to pursue her MA in Romance Languages, specializing in Italian. As part of her fellowship, she will teach Elementary Italian (ITL 111) and participate in the Center's activities and initiatives. Welcome, Sophia!
