SUPPORT our work to re-envision the role of the humanities and of those who explore the nature of human experience
SUPPORT our ongoing conversations within the public sphere about what it means to be human
SUPPORT our work elevating and re-defining the arts and humanities
At the Humanities Institute at Stony Brook, we support and showcase the work of those who explore the nature of human experience, whether through academic research or artistic expression. Exploration may be philosophical, historical, musical, literary, theatrical, visual, political or something in between. HISB creates a forum for dialogue about who and what we are; how and why we make shared knowledge; who might be included and excluded from it; and what we ought, and ought not, to do with it.
The Humanities Institute at Stony Brook is a resource for humanities academic life at Stony Brook University. With arts and humanities funding still in decline in public schools, colleges and universities are frequently the first place for young adults to step out of their familiar world and see a whole new universe of ideas, perspectives and creative possibilities; to discover strengths and passions they didn’t realize they had. Endowment monies will support our continuing efforts to expand student enrichment programs like “Pressing Matters,” which brings prominent scholars and artists to SBU classrooms; grow the HISB undergraduate internship program; fund a “Pedagogy Hub” for graduate students and faculty to hone their skills through teaching-focused seminars and new skills-building workshops.
